Summer is around the corner, fashionistas! It's time for sun, fun and
blockbusters. I won't mince words, I've been waiting decades for what I
think will be 2006's biggest box office smash. Think ribbons of high-rise
lined beaches, fast cars, sizzling night spots, bikini clad babes, and a duo
of hunky detectives to boot. The Miami Vice movie will premier in theaters
worldwide this summer, bringing the superchic city celebré back to the
spotlight. And not a moment too soon. This South Florida haven for the
rich and beautiful epitomizes the glittering and glamorous style that
prevails in the fashion pages for the next few seasons. Forget heat and
humidity, it is a look that's about cool elegance and designer duds.
And it will last from the dog days of summer well into fall's shorter days
and longer nights.
So how does an NYC native pull off South Beach style? It begins with the
bling. Jewelry just keeps getting bigger. Solid gold cuffs and bangles top
the trends--and this time around MORE means more. This look ran rampant
during red carpet season. A-listers like Eva Longoria, Jennifer Lopez and
Virginia Madsen were spotted with gem-encrusted versions of this must-
have accessory. Layered on bronzed summer skin, these precious baubles
epitomize Ocean Drive. For the less extravagant shopper, turquoise is the
quintessential summer stone. This vibrant blue treasure reminds me of
Miami's azure coastline. I saw it on the runways not just in jewelry but also
on bags and shoes. My pick for the season--an A. Testoni leather wedge
detailed with silver and turquoise filagree. Muy caliente!
But the perennial Miami accessory is none other than the perfect pair of
shades. Time to toss those wayfayers and splurge on something spectacular.
Curved frames and gradient lenses rule this season and you can take your
pick from any one of many styles. Oakley premiered their line of sophisticated
and uniquely feminine eyewear during February's Olympus Fashion Week
at Bryant Park in New York.
And of course, what homage to Miami would be complete without a mention
of swimwear. Get ready to strut your stuff, because it's double the pleasure
with a bevy of two pieces that will make even the most seasoned Miamian
blush. Go white hot with the supreme simplicity of a belted ivory bikini by
Dolce and Gabbana. Or perhaps flirty and feminine is more your style…
flaunt those curves with a floral number by London label, PPQ. Play the part
of sophisticated stunner in a pleated gold maillot by Cyn & Luca. And for
the sporty type, Nike introduces a saucy yet practical suit in basic black
that's sure to rev their engines.
As for finishing touches....nothing captures the sultry opulence of the Miami
scene like meticulously manicured fingers and toes. And this season, color
is not for the faint of heart. It's time to heat up the days and the nights with
a trio of ORLY neon shimmers. These colors instantly beautify sun drenched
summer skin. They'll look great with your favorite pair of strappy sandals or
that barely-there cocktail dress. Hot pink, tantalizing tangerine and electric
purple... these three luscious shades turn up the heat on even the most
modest of ensembles. Best of all, they transition beautifully into the next
season, just in time to add a splash of passion and excitement to your fall
and winter wardrobes.
So I'm off my darlings, to a quick mani and pedi appointment before a day
spent lounging at the pool--and a night out on the town! My Crockett or
Tubbs could be waiting, so I best get ready.
Cheers!
